With a name like Kamikaze 2: The Way of Ninja, you'd expect something a little more hack and slash. Unfortunately, if hack and slash is what you desire then you're looking in the wrong place. Kamikaze 2 is a game for you if you desire a lacklustre role-playing game set in feudal Japan.
You take the role of Fujiama, an ex-peasant turned ninja clan-leader who's longing to escape his killer lifestyle. Instead, he takes it upon himself to avenge the deaths of his fellow villagers. This sets him off on a quest to seek out those who have wronged his village and take them out Shuriken style.
Normal RPG's are supposed to engage you in a epic struggle of you versus the entire world, which Kamikaze 2 does achieve, but in a way that fails to be remotely engaging. Fujiama goes about his quest by constantly walking through endless screens of green fields, while occasionally talking to people, with the odd fight thrown into the mix.
Graphically it looks nice, but with the same scenery over and over again, you're never really sure if you're getting anywhere. It's only when a paddy-hatted farmer shows up in the field that you realise you must be on the right path. What may look like your typical Japanese rice farmer is actually an enemy ninja in disguise and this is where you put your ninja skills to the test.
Fighting is fairly basic, you and your enemy face-off in rice fields and take it in turns to launch your weaponry at each other. Both come equipped with a health bar and it's a case of using your most powerful ninja tool to take them down first. You'll begin the quest with a Shuriken, which can be levelled up to become more powerful and effective, and eventually you'll be wielding swords.
You'll occasionally stumble upon small villages, but nothing interesting tends to happen in these places other than meeting lingually confused folk. The people like to confuse you with the nonsensical speech, which is somewhere between modern language and ancient verse, but don't worry, there isn't the usual drawn-out conversations that you'll often find in the genre.
Every thing about Kamikaze 2 is basic - the exploration, fighting, upgrading and magic abilities are all executed in the most basic way. This is a good thing if you're new to the genre and want the ninjas in feudal Japan to teach you the basics of walking, talking, levelling-up and turn-based battling, but if you're seeking strategy, depth and challenge then you won't find any in period of history.
