Having Tiger Woods in the palm of your hands would be a dream for any gold-digging young lady out there (back off girls, he's married), but in this instance, it simply means another mobile game in his long-running collaboration with EA.
The 09 edition of Tiger Woods on mobile is a very much casual affair, as opposed to the grand, feature packed console editions. In fact, the N95 8gb version reviewed here features just two courses to play on, despite the multitude of course licenses that the opening loading screens brag about. As was the case with the 07 edition, however, it seems as though the improved graphical features of the higher spec phone versions are the compromise for the lack of courses.
Game-play is split across four modes, with Quick Start throwing you into a simple round on your own, and Practice letting you hone your skills on individual holes without pressure. The main bulk of the action comes from the Tournament and Challenge modes.
The Tournament mode lets you compete against five other golfers in a game of Stroke Play on one of the game's courses. You can take the slightly easier route of playing as Tiger Woods for this mode, or use your very own created golfer (more on that feature, shortly). To add a spot of replay value to the mode, you can attempt it on one of the three difficulty settings in the game, Amateur, Pro or Legend. Unless you're especially familiar with the courses on offer, it's advised that you work your way up through the difficulties.
In the meantime, Challenge Mode aims to add a bit of variety to the game, giving you specific tasks to perform in set places, as opposed to just playing round after round. Again, these challenges can be attempted on varying difficulties, ensuring that players of different skill levels are catered for, and that those who start at the bottom can feel a sense of progression.
The creation mode, as mentioned earlier, is perhaps not as elaborate as you might hope it would be in this day and age. In this instance, you don't even get to give your self-styled avatar a name, which it being restricted solely to Created Player. Or Play for short. In fact, you don't even get to choose the gender of your character either, leaving you forced to play as a male, which is all well and good if you want to do that, of course.
Your only level of choice in creating a character is the colour of their skin, the colour of their shirt, and the colour of their trousers. It's certainly not something that you can gain a high level of attachment to. Despite this though, this crude representation will allow you to collect all manner of trophy balls throughout the game, a decent reason for you to keep coming back and playing over and over again.
Playing the game uses a fairly tried and tested formula. Aim your shot using the d-pad, selecting either a general direction that you want the shot to go in, or zooming in to fine-tune the required position. Once ready, you hold the action button to start increasing the power of the shot, releasing it when it's at the required level.
The control set-up works well for the most part, but you can find yourself making mistakes if you've got a phone that likes to turn its back-light off very quickly, which will often happen during the surprisingly long loading times between strokes. On more than one occasion, I found myself going instinctively for the action button to switch the light back on again, only to wind up accidentally causing my golfer to take a weak and feeble shot.
Slightly annoying also is the sudden lag that seems to come when the ball is bouncing on the green or fairway. The picture seems to freeze up briefly, and often the ball will come to a sudden, unexplained stop.
The previously mentioned long loading times can make a round take far more time than you might otherwise hope for, but on the plus side, you can simply exit the game and pick up your round from where you left off at a later date.
When Tiger Woods works, it works well indeed, but it's certainly not without faults, not least the luke-warm creation options and the lack of courses. However, if you're after a solid (if unspectacular) golfing title, then you could do a lot worse.
