Even if you don't have a driving license in real life, every racing game fan likes to pretend they're Michael Schumacher or Colin McRae. We can't all be Formula 1 or Rally drivers, but that's why video games were invented, right? To live out our unreachable dreams. 4x4 comes to the mobile with its bird's eye view drift racing. Don't expect manual control over acceleration and gear changing though, all that's required here is steering control and precision. That's no fun! Well actually, it is fun.
You have the usual quick race option, but career mode is what it's all about. This is where you can truly see if you're a great virtual driver or not. The events on offer are standard time trials, 4-man races and slalom. Each of which can vary in difficulty depending on your car choice, weather and track surface. From the get-go your car accelerates, it's down to you to control it, drifting it around corners, avoiding obstacles, finding short cuts and eventually slipping into 1st place.
The tracks are great fun to manoeuvre around, whether it's racing against other cars, the clock or trying not to run over traffic cones. Don't expect a overly realistic simulation though, as such obstacles to avoid include speeding trains!. It's satisfying to grind against an opponent and send them crashing into the train as you speed off and gain distance (with a grin). There's also the inclusion of everyone's favourite bonus, Nitro. As usual it can only be used for a limited time, so it's best saved for crucial moments, such as to see off a troublesome opponent or on a rare long straight.
It's a mobile game, so don't expect Gran Turismo-style car choice and customisation, but what you can do is choose from a various selection of cars, from standard rally, off road vehicles to Porsche and Ferrari types. You can change the colour from a standard shine to hot or icy (in other words, bright or dreary) and there's a little tuning that can be done when you win gold stars. It's not much, mainly speed and handling etc, but it doesn't need to be.
In order to unlock more events, you need to win a certain amount of gold stars, which can be obtained with a performance good enough for the top three in each event. Expect to play the same tracks and events frequently, which isn't a bad thing as they're fun to master and you'll thrive on the challenge. Winning that No.1 spot is immensely satisfying, but unfortunately when it's done there's no real desire to replay that particular event again. This can be said for the entire career mode, unless you like the idea of going through it again with a different car.
Thankfully, if you do get bored of the single player modes, there's a multiplayer option to keep you and your friends busy. 4x4 is easy to pick up, but very tough to master, it's extremely addictive nonetheless. Although it won't keep you busy for several months on end, you'll certainly have the desire to come back to it again, even if only for a quick race against a friend.
