Back in the days before we got to be space marines, gangsters or trigger-happy cops, we gamers were quite content to be humble Paperboys, desperately delivering the daily news while trying to avoid dogs, cars, runaway lawnmowers and other crazy obstacles, before enjoying a quick spin on the BMX track when the job was done.
Wheels on Fire brings the legendary arcade game to mobile phones, with a few additional twists and modes to up the enjoyment. But does this retro racer still have peddle power behind it?
Before you begin, a forced tutorial will show you what the basic premise of the game is all about. Even if you know full well how it works, you have no choice but to watch this before it lets you take to the saddle yourself. You might even notice a few differences to the game you're used to, as well, so pay close attention!
Once through the tutorial, you can move onto the actual game-play itself, in either Career or Challenge mode. Career is the mode that will be familiar to long-time fans of the game. Split into five levels, each one representing a day of the week, you peddle up the streets (Easy, Medium and Hard streets are available) throwing out papers to subscribed houses, trying to get it to land on their doorstep or in their mailbox. As you'll be travelling at speed, timing is vitally important, and you'll be having to release the papers earlier to ensure they land in the right place. How early depends mainly on how far away from the mailbox you are, and how fast you're going.
Should your throw miss the mailbox or doorstep, or if you wind up causing damage to the house in anyway (breaking a window, etc) then that house will not be subscribing to the paper again. To complete a day, you need to ensure that the minimum number of subscribers stated receive their paper. The less you get, the harder you make things for yourself on the next day. Bonus points can be earned for hitting certain hazards or obstacles too, but as you have a limited supply of papers (though more can be picked up), you need to be careful with what you throw.
There are some slight differences from the standard game that might come as a surprise to veterans. For a start, you begin each level with only 1 life, and have to collect extra ones as you ride along. Also, on later levels, you'll be given the option to take left or right turns, and deliver to houses from a side-on perspective, rather than the standard isometric view. Also, the game's loads up the BMX bonus levels separately from the main street, rather than blending straight into them. If you don't complete the objective for the level, you don't get to go stunt riding. When you do fail, you can instantly retry the level again, without having to go right back to the start of the week.
Challenge Mode takes out the paper delivery side of things, and instead tasks you to hit specific obstacles with your papers and reach the end of the level within a time limit. At the end, you'll be given a score and a ranking, which you can then attempt to beat if you so desire. If anything, this is more a means of easing you into the game's controls without having to worry too much about the delivery side of things. Similarly, for an even easier time, you can elect to use Auto Steer and Auto Speed options, leaving you free to solely concentrate on getting your papers out.
The game's graphics retain the old school charm of the original, with a few extra cartoonish elements added on top for good measure. Even the croaky, robotic sounding voice work is included for that extra retro flavour! Almost 30 years on, Paperboy is a still a challenging yet addictive piece of casual gaming action, and this mobile version serves as a solid reminder. Who needs big guns and fast cars, when a BMX and a sack full of papers will suffice?
