Word and number puzzles games are all the craze right now. In the olden days people would buy a puzzle book or a daily newspaper and spend lunch breaks or long journeys thinking over the crossword solutions. In this technological age, the hand-held gaming market is the place to be for these simple, yet mind perplexing games. The casual market has no set target age and let's face it everyone loves to test their brain against those words and numbers. So if you like to spend weekday afternoons flirting with numbers in Countdown, then Allwords is a game for you.
Allwords does exactly what it says on the tin. You start with 8 jumbled up letters and with these you need to find 'all' the 'words' before the time runs out. These range from simple 3 letter words (ham) all the way to a full conundrum of an eight letter word (hamsters), but in this you could also find a 6 letter word (master), you get the idea.
If you're intelligent enough to find all the available words within the time frame, not only are you a genius, but you'll also receive a new set of words and a score. This score can be shown off to friends, or if you're really competitive you can upload it to the game developer's website. Unfortunately you won't see my high score there any time ever.
The amount of available words is shown at the top of the screen, so at least you know what you're aiming for. Of course you'll pick out the 3 letter words fairly frequently, but your mind will always be looking at the tricky 8 letters. Occasionally I found legitimate words which weren't recognised by the game, which was slightly annoying because I know 'eel' is a word, but if the word is not on the list, it won't be accepted. You get to see the missed word list when the timer runs down to zero. Of course it will make you wonder why you didn't manage to find half of them, but oh well.
You have roughly 6 minutes to work your way through the puzzle, which seems fine at first, but when you reach the last 30 seconds and the big 8 letter has yet to be found, you'll feel the sweat drip off your brow. It's a simple concept for complex minds.
In the long run, Allwords is a slightly addictive game that will consume your time for many hours. Bus journey? What bus journey?
