In late 2007, a console game came along that wowed audiences with its bleak landscapes, cool combination of weapons and powers, and captivating story (including one particularly interesting twist). That game was BioShock, and now the epic first person action-adventure has found itself being retold on the mobile format.
BioShock takes place in 1960, but this is not the decade of mop-tops and Beatles that we know of. Oh no, instead you're transported to a place known as Rapture - an underwater civilization that would eventually be of use to all mankind. The trouble is, something has gone horribly wrong here. The corridors and halls of this underwater paradise are deserted and in tatters, and the only people around don't seem to be human, or at least, not any more.
Your only guide through this world is able to vocally communicate with you, leading you where you need to go and explaining what these enemies are that you're coming into contact with. These Splicers, as they're known, are not to be taken lightly. The different types of Splicers are generally named based upon their weapon of choice, like the gun-toting ones who are known as Leadhead Splicers.
To combat them, you'll need to use a combination of weaponry and plasmids. Plasmids are a special kind of tonic that you inject into yourself to gain special powers. These are powered by a substance known as EVE, with further plasmids and upgrades for existing ones purchasable by using a kind of object-cum-currency called ADAM (see what they've done there?).
You'll earn ADAM by saving or harvesting Little Sisters, small creepy girls that also wander around Rapture. While you'd think you'd be able to easily handle a small girl, there is a slight snag in the process. Each Little Sister is protected by a Big Daddy, who lumbers around in a metallic diving suit, toting a massive big drill that will put a hole right through you. Defeating the Big Daddy will give you the chance to harvest or save the sister for her ADAM, but this is no easy task.
Also scattered throughout Rapture are Vita Chambers, which basically perform the task of raising you from the dead. As you progress, you'll grab first aid kits that will allow you to keep your health high, but if you can't use them in time, you will die. At this point, a cloned version of you (carrying all your weapons and power-ups) will come to life at the last Vita Chamber you used, allowing you to continue on your way. It's certainly a novel way of getting around the whole resurrection thing.
As you might expect, BioShock on mobile doesn't go with the first person view of the console version, opting instead for a kind of top down view on proceedings. It retells the story of the game, taking out a few small elements, like the whole notion of photographing splicers to research them and increase the damage you can do. For anyone who has already played it on 360, PS3 and PC, it does mean that the various twists and turns won't have the same impact that they did first time around. But for newcomers, they'll get the pleasure of enjoying it for the first time (though to be truly honest, you'd enjoy it more on the big screen).
There are some annoying moments with the controls, especially as you have to switch between using plasmids and weapons by pressing the 7 and 9 keys. By the time you've fired a plasmid to stun an enemy, pressed 9 to go to your weapon, and then gone back to 5/Action to shoot them down, the stun effect has generally worn off. Of course, once you've been able to do a spot of upgrading, you get more time to do all this, though it remains somewhat fiddly.
Okay, Bioshock on mobile was never going to be a beater of its big brother, but when you think about it, that's an unfair comparison anyway. On its own merits, Bioshock is a captivating, action-packed and enjoyable mobile experience, which is sure to keep players occupied for quite some time. It's not without its flaws, true, but you'll find that these can generally be forgiven.
