It's been eight years since The Sims first entered the world of gaming, and almost five since the first official sequel. Now, after many years, even more expansion packs and the green-lighting of a movie version, The Sims 3 has hit PCs and been joined by this mobile edition too.
The general premise hasn't exactly changed all that much. You control the day-to-day life of your character, making them eat, sleep, wash and go to work - generally making sure that they don't die or go bankrupt. Along the way, your Sim can interact with other members of the community, making friends and enemies, perhaps even finding love!
In The Sims 3 for mobile, you begin by customising your own personal character. There are eight pre-set designs to choose from (a mixture of male and female), which can then be tweaked accordingly. It's not a particularly elaborate customisation situation, you can only choose the colour of your character's skin, hair and clothes, as well as their hair style and the length of their sleeves and trousers.
Once your characters looks how you want them to be, you can then select their overall persona, as well as individual traits too. This will effect what your overall goals in the game are - for example, a female character that chooses the Nice Girl trait will have the unenviable task of becoming friends with everybody in town. Best get a few good jokes and compliments prepared! The last thing you do before heading out into action is to name your character.
Your Sim starts off in a fairly basic house, with enough items to keep them clean, entertained, fed and rested. As you earn money, you'll be able to upgrade this house and buy additional items to help keep you in the lap of luxury. But unlike many other Sim games, you're not actually restricting to staying in the house the whole time.
Now you can finally explore the world outside your door, going to the town area where you can visit shops, go to work or find a job, and even play little mini-games like fishing. No longer do you scour the newspaper to find your chosen career, instead you just visit one of the local outlets, click on it and select the "Get Job" option to find gainful work. Everything is in quick walking distance of your house, so you'll now be expected to stroll on over for your shifts, rather than just getting in the car like on previous games. Promotions can be even earned for making quick decisions like tattling on a co-worker who's pocketing cash from the till!
Controls remain SIMple as always, with the d-pad controlling your pointer, and a click of the action button bringing up a menu to select the available options from. Your current objectives and status bars are merely a press of the Hash and Star button away too, making it easy to determine what you need to do to improve your Sim's mood.
Talking with friends and potential friends has also been improved now, with on-screen messages giving the player a better idea of how the other characters feel about your words and actions, as well as the basic Plus and Minus icons. You can even apologise if something you say creeps out a friend!
Some may argue that this is just more of the same, and in some cases, they might be right. However, the expansions that have been made really give you greater control over the life of your character, rather than just what they do when they're at home. If you enjoyed The Sims 2, then there's certainly no reason why you wouldn't enjoy, or for that matter, prefer The Sims 3!
