Do you think you're the undisputed master of the classic snake game? Then you may just want to try your slithery luck with Snake Revolution!
If you've been living under a rock for the past few years, you may not have a clue what Snake is all about or what to do. Well, basically you must manoeuvre a snake around the screen without bumping into walls or obstacles, all the while trying to pick up food. This sounds pretty straightforward, and it is - apart from one important detail - your snake grows with every goodie you've gobbled along the way.
This is very true to the original style Snake; you move your snake about the screen and what starts out as a relatively simple task of munching on 'stars', quite quickly gets more challenging as your snake grows larger, and ultimately proves to be more of an obstacle (if your snake's mouth makes contact with his tail, it's as bad as crashing into a wall). The classic version of the game is all about scoring as much as you can by eating as much as you can and surviving as long as you can.
The 'Snake World' game is a nice twist on the classic. What starts out as a bit of a mysterious hunt for the Princess Snake rapidly evolves into a more difficult game. As before, with all the stars you eat, the longer your snake grows, which can pose a bit of a health risk to your score. In this instance though, the map also evolves and proves to be a brute of a course at times.
At the end of each level, you can either jump to the next one by following the rainbow gate that appears, or try to improve your score by greedily snapping up bonus stars. Of course, being too greedy could prove to be your undoing!
Obstacles aren't always dangerous to you though. From time to time a mushroom will appear which, when eaten, causes your snake's head to grow. More importantly, it allows you to munch your way through certain obstacles like logs, which otherwise cause you to crash out early.
Another object you'll see is the snail, which will slow your snake's movement down. This is a mixed blessing, on the one hand you'll have more time to move your snake around the screen and avoid hitting things, but on the other, your timing could go a little off, meaning you wind up doing hit something when you try to move too quickly. As with many Snake-style games out there, you get to pick the speed at which your snake moves from slow, normal, fast and (if you're feeling kinda crazy) very fast.
For me, this is a cute, well detailed and thoroughly enjoyable version of the original game. The classic version does provide quite a challenge - particularly when trying to beat your own high-scores. The story mode, meanwhile, gives you a run for your money, challenging you more and more as you progress.
